Harry Maguire says poor club form may be affecting England defence

Englands disappointing defeat at the Czech Republic could have been down into several players going into the international break in club kind, according to Harry Maguire.
After Fridays 2-0 defeat, England have surrendered eight goals in the previous five games. In that time, Southgate has just selected the back.
Maguire, who performed Danny Rose Michael Keane and Kieran Trippier at Prague, has become the mainstay from the defence since November and is keen to find a solid back .
Asked when there was a lack of optimism among the back-line Maguire replied:Yes, possibly.
We bring our club football into international level. It was a challenging game. Dont get me wrong, we began cluttered. We took the lead in the game but we did not deserve to.
The second half we controlled the match far more than the first half we gave them a messy goal to win the game. We do need to improve on that.
Obviously youre wishing to build partnerships. Sometimes in level you can not actually do this.
Youve got players that arent playing with their clubs so they dont get selected, and youve got players who pick up accidents.
Youve got to accommodate. Thats one of those tricky sections of playing every camp you playing with players that are distinct, football – you dont need to be – and also will need to create new partnerships.
But listen, theres no explanations. We will need to become better than Friday night. We will need to be going forward. We need to be better over the ball. And we certainly need to become better in keeping the ball out of the net.
England could have sealed their qualification for Euro 2020. But they could still be eligible on Monday when they beat Kosovo and Bulgaria fail to win against Montenegro.
Southgate had success with England at the Russia World Cup in 2018 – taking them using a three and admits he can revert to this system.
I think were in a difficult situation concerning the players that have played international soccer with us in that region of the pitch and who are playing regularly together with their teams, Southgate said.
So, that is part of the reason why we did not do that [from the Czech Republic].
It is certainly something we have considered and that I do not think we can dismiss.
I am not sure, before Monday, if thats the ideal thing to do but we are very aware and assessing those things
Asked if theres sufficient time to execute a defensive change in method before Euro 2020, Southgate said:I believe so, I believe players participate in tactical concepts very quickly, particularly top players.
So, we have to keep reflecting on whats working, whats potential and learn from every experience we have.
Well find out a lot from [the Czech game]. We have had.
[This] was a proper test and we did not come through, therefore itd be naive to take the lessons from what weve seen on the pitch.
